I had my
first serious brush with photography at the age of 14, when I did a photography
work experience, learning how to shoot analog and how to process photos in the
darkroom. After school, I studied cinematography, script-writing and editing at
the Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Hamburg, with Elfi Mikesch and Renee Verdan. I then
moved into Opera, assisting Richard Jones
and other directors. When I began to do my own theatre work, film became a
vital part of the stagings I was involved in.
In 2003
I started to have serious doubts about the usefulness of my work. I decided to
re-train to become an environmental scientist. With no previous scientific
training I had to study from scratch. I am currently in the process of completeing my DPhil. Also in 2003, shortly after having finished what I
considered to be my last ever theatre job, I got a digital camera. The art I
had declared useless, had sneaked up on me from behind. You can now safely
call me a photography junkie. Unlike my previous work, though, my photos are
strictly documentary. What with the astonishing beauty that surrounds us everywhere
and every day - and our careless treatment of it - I don’t think anything but
documentation is needed.
